Education Survival Guide for the AI Era (1)

Promising Majors in the Age of AI: Why Attitude Matters More Than Technical Skills

As AI permeates deeper into our daily lives, the questions asked during career counseling are shifting. The question, "Which major is safe now?" is laden with anxiety, while "Is studying still important when AI does everything?" reflects genuine confusion. Many students and parents are frantically searching for the "perfect major" for the AI era, but the reality is more nuanced. In the age of AI, the direction of a major has become far more important than its name.

Computer Science and Data Science continue to attract significant attention. However, simply being good at coding—as was sufficient in the past—is no longer enough to maintain a competitive edge. in an era where AI writes code and debugs errors, the ability to design systems, understand technological limitations, and take responsibility for outcomes has become paramount. We are shifting from an era that needs people who build technology to one that requires people who can control and evaluate it.

Perhaps surprisingly, Business and Management are gaining even greater traction in the AI era. While AI can analyze vast amounts of data and offer predictions, interpreting those results and making final decisions remains the domain of humans. The ability to read market trends, persuade others, and make choices amidst uncertainty is difficult to automate. Consequently, the value of majors focusing on strategy, leadership, and decision-making is actually rising.

Psychology and Behavioral Sciences also deserve attention. As AI analyzes human behavior more rigorously, the need for expertise to deeply understand the human condition grows. The ability to interpret human emotions, motivations, and decision-making processes cannot be easily replaced by technology. These majors offer high career flexibility, expanding into diverse fields such as UX design, marketing, education, and healthcare.

The Healthcare and Life Sciences sectors are seeing some of the most rapid integration with AI. While AI’s role in diagnostic assistance, medical data analysis, and personalized treatment planning is expanding, the ultimate judgment and responsibility remain with medical professionals. There is likely to be an increasing demand for talent that understands the technology but can still make human-centric judgments.

Education and Educational Technology are also being re-evaluated as high-potential fields. As AI tutors and online learning platforms spread, the ability to design what and how to teach becomes crucial. The role of experts who understand learner characteristics, create evaluation criteria, and mitigate the side effects of technological dependence is becoming increasingly significant.

Law and Public Policy are emerging as core fields in the AI era. As technology accelerates, the importance of norms and institutions—spanning privacy protection, algorithmic accountability, and ethical issues—grows alongside it. Legal and policy experts who understand technology are poised to play critical roles throughout society.

Finally, the value of Humanities-based majors cannot be overlooked. Fields that deal with human thought and meaning, such as Philosophy, Ethics, and Communication, are becoming even more necessary. As AI provides answers, the human ability to question whether those answers are correct becomes vital.

Ultimately, a promising major in the AI era is not merely a "tech-heavy major," but a "tech-savvy major." Rather than choosing a path based solely on the name of the degree, career success will be determined by the attitude one takes: asking how to utilize AI within that field and defining what role must remain human.

AI does not choose the path for you. It merely amplifies your choices—making them louder and faster. The students who understand this distinction will possess true competitiveness in the age of AI.
