Did you know you can earn a U.S. degree in less than four years while saving both time and tuition costs? The secret lies in utilizing CLEP (College-Level Examination Program) exams to earn college credits without taking classes.
With tuition fees rising every year—especially for international students—the financial burden of studying in the U.S. can be overwhelming. However, CLEP exams allow students to test out of courses, reducing the number of classes they need to take and significantly cutting down on tuition and living expenses.
What is CLEP?
CLEP is a program offered by College Board, designed to help students earn college credits by demonstrating their knowledge through exams rather than coursework.
Currently, approximately 2,900 colleges and universities in the U.S. accept CLEP scores for credit, and the program covers 33 different subjects. Passing a CLEP exam grants you the same credit as completing the corresponding college course. This means students can use CLEP exams to replace general education courses, allowing them to graduate faster.

The History of CLEP
Introduced in 1967, CLEP was created to provide a flexible path for students who didn’t follow traditional educational routes, such as adult learners, working professionals, military personnel, and homeschooled students.
Many U.S. military veterans and active-duty service members use CLEP to accelerate their education. Some institutions even offer free CLEP exams for military personnel, making it a cost-effective way to earn a degree.
CLEP Exam Fees & Free Testing Opportunities
The standard CLEP exam fee is $95, plus an additional test center fee depending on where you take the exam. However, students can take CLEP exams for free through Modern States, an online education platform.
Modern States provides free CLEP preparation courses, and upon completion, students receive a voucher to cover the exam fee. This means you can earn college credits at zero cost if you utilize this program effectively. (Visit modernstates.org for details.)
Available CLEP Subjects & How to Take the Exam
CLEP covers 33 different subjects, including:

Social Sciences: U.S. History, Psychology, Sociology

CLEP exams can be taken in two ways:
Online (Remote Proctoring) – Only available for test-takers residing in the U.S.

Why Take CLEP Exams?
Cost Savings: At just $95 per exam, CLEP is far cheaper than traditional college courses.
Faster Graduation: By testing out of general education courses, students can complete their degree in 2–3 years instead of 4.
Flexible Learning: CLEP allows students to study at their own pace and take exams when they feel ready.
If you’re preparing to study in the U.S., CLEP can be a game-changer in saving time and money. By leveraging Modern States' free courses and CLEP exams, students can earn college credits without spending extra on tuition.
However, keep in mind that online CLEP exams are only available to U.S. residents. If you’re in Canada, South Korea, China, or any other country, you’ll need to take your exams at an official test center.
Maximize your study abroad experience with CLEP and achieve your degree faster and more affordably!
