Your Fate Changing from November 1, 2024 – Canadian Student Visa News

"Ah, thank goodness! I applied for my study permit before November 1, 2024!"

"Ah, thank goodness! I’m going to a university offering a four-year or higher degree!"

"Ah, thank goodness! Even though I’m attending a two-year college, my program is related to healthcare or falls within the top five in-demand occupations!"

If these situations don't apply to you, you may have to return to your home country after completing your studies in Canada without obtaining a Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP).

You may already know that, in order to limit the number of international students, Canada has changed the rules since earlier this year. Now, international students aiming to study at higher education institutions must receive a PAL letter, which is issued only within the province’s quota, in order to apply for a student visa. In addition to this, I will give a detailed breakdown of the recently announced new visa regulations, which are causing international students to protest.

Your fate changing from November 1, 2024 Canada has offered many benefits to international students to attract them. For instance, it provided free education to the children of students studying at two-year colleges, without limiting the number of children. It also offered an open work permit to the spouse, allowing the family to support themselves. With just around 17,000 Canadian dollars in annual college tuition fees, the whole family could receive significant benefits. If the spouse worked, the family would also be eligible for health cards, allowing them to receive free medical care, including hospital stays and surgeries. However, everything has changed since April 30, 2024. Now, only the spouses of students with study permits for Master’s or PhD programs, or those pursuing a Bachelor's degree in nursing, engineering, or education, can obtain an open work permit.

Furthermore, from November 1, 2024, international students applying for a study permit will also face restrictions on their eligibility to receive a Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP), which was previously granted upon graduation.

Eligibility for the Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP)

  • If you submitted your study permit application before November 1, 2024, graduated with a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree or doctoral degree from a university, and achieved CLB level 7

  • If you submitted your study permit application before November 1, 2024, graduated with a college program, and achieved CLB level 5

  • If you submit your study permit application on or after November 1, 2024, graduated with a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree or doctoral degree from a university, and achieved CLB level 7

  • If you submit your study permit application on or after November 1, 2024, studied a two-year college program in one of the following five categories, and achieved CLB level 5

    • Agriculture and agri-food

    • Healthcare

    • Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)

    • Skilled Trades

    • Transportation

You can search the detailed list of eligible programs for the PGWP on the immigration department's website below.

This sudden change has had a significant impact on international students from all over the world. As a result, many international students have protested and demonstrated against the Canadian government.

If you are planning to study in Canada, make sure to check if your program is eligible for a work permit after graduation. Immigration policies change frequently, so we strongly recommend you check the updated information on the immigration website before making any important decisions.
